Wreaths Across America honors veterans

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

A large crowd turned out for the Wreaths Across America program held Dec. 10 at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield. Shown at left are members of each of the seven branches of the armed forces as they placed a ceremonial wreath in remembrance of those who have died serving their country. The branches are Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and the POW/MIA. Patriot Guard Riders Senior Ride Captain Randy Dunn served as master of ceremonies for the event, which is held annually by the non-profit group Wreaths Across America. Through community contributions, enough sponsorships were received to place a wreath on every gravesite (over 1,500) at the Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield. The program began in 1992 by Morrill Worcester at Arlington National Cemetery. The program became a national program in 2007 and includes every state, some territories and 24 overseas cemeteries now. In 2010 over 100,000 wreaths were placed during Wreaths Across America.
