Haying continues to be a very difficult task. A few rainless days have occurred and some fields have been baled but many producers are still unable to get into overly saturated fields. Hay curing has also been quite difficult even if producers can get hay cut. Tedders have been seeing much use as farmers try to get some air between the wet soil and the windrows. Wheat harvest is getting underway so some new crop straw should be available soon. The supply of hay is moderate and demand is light. Prices are steady although market activity has been very light. Harvest got under way over this past weekend as a break was received in the weather. Moisture levels have been surprisingly low overall but a fairly wide range of moisture levels have been reported in the 15-25 percent range. Many buyers and farmers have expressed disappointment with yields. Several feel there was some seed loss in the storms last week and are very aware of the upcoming forecast. Factors indicative of very high nutritive content. Hay is excellent color and free of damage. Premium: Early maturity, i.e., pre-bloom in legumes and pre head in grass hays, extra leafy and fine stemmed-factors indicative of a high nutritive content. Hay is green and free of damage. Good: Early to average maturity, i.e., early to mid-bloom in legumes and early head in grass hays, leafy, fine to medium stemmed, free of damage other than slight discoloration. Fair: Late maturity, i.e., mid to late-bloom in legumes, head-in grass hays, moderate or below leaf content, and generally coarse stemmed. Hay may show light damage. Utility: Hay in very late maturity, such as mature seed pods in legumes or mature head in grass hays, coarse stemmed.
