Advance RIV school board changes elementary leadership

Garner was the counselor at Zalma, before being employed by Advance. Social Studies teacher James Hamlin will replace Garner as elementary principal at Advance.

The Advance RIV Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, April 21, 2014.

The board accepted the resignation of Elementary Principal Shannon Garner, who has accepted a position as elementary principal with the Zalma schools. The RIV Board approved James Hamlin as his replacement.

Superintendent Stan Seiler informed board members that he has completed the requirements for his PhD, but he requested that the prefix "Dr." not be added to his name.

The board also heard a report from Mr. Neil Miles insupport of the current volleyball coach.

In the reorganization section of the meeting, President David Kennedy administered the oath of office to newly-elected members Nanie Hawkins, Ronnie Martin, and Tom Schmidt.

David Kennedy was re-elected to the office of board president for the 2014-2015 term, while Linda Eggimann was elected as vice-president, Ronnie Martin was elected secretary, and Charles Mayo was elected treasurer.

Superintendent Stan Seiler's report included current enrollment figures of 94.54 per cent for March and 95.17 per cent for the year. March enrollment was 416.

The superintendent's financial report was as follows: Revenues, as compared to last year, are up and expenditures are also up, but both are in line with projected revenues and expenditures in the 2013-2014 budget. A copy of the budget will be posted on the district web page at www.advance.k12.mo.us.

Summer school plans were discussed. It is scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 27, running 4 days per week for 15 days and ending Friday, June 20, 2014 for a total of 120 hours. The board received a basic schedule, which will also be distributed to teachers and parents.

High School Principal Shana Kight provided an update on the progress of the A+ Scholarship Program.

Advance High School Choir students participated in the district music competition recently and scored several number one ratings. Board members received a list. Individual students or groups scoring a "1" rating qualified for state competition in Columbia.

A committee consisting of parents (Josh Johnson, Sheila Hahn, Teresia Shrum and Jody Crader), teachers (Amy Gilmore, Sarah Wilson, Sarah Heuring, Dana Below, Heather Roe-Evans and Tomisine Bazzell) and administrators (Mrs. Kight, Mr. Garner and Mr. Seiler) have been meeting for the last couple of months to make recommendations on a revised district attendance policy and procedure. The committee's work is nearing completion and a draft of the committee's work to this point was presented with the hope of presenting final recommendations to the board for consideration at the May meeting.

District personnel continue to meet with the architect to conclude initial conceptual drawings of the agriculture building expansion.

The district's official application for a safe room (stage two) has been submitted for review by SEMA and FEMA officials.

Both high school principals reviewed the upcoming activities and events for April and May. These activities can be viewed in detail on the Advance School website.

The board reviewed the MSIP report on evaluation of technology.

The board took action on the following items:

· Approved Mrs. Jordan Wake as commencement speaker.

· Approved Advance R-IV Schools to remain part ofthe Southeast Schools Insurance Consortium for health insurance purposes for the 2014-2015 school year. (Coventry as carrier)

· Approved revisions to board policies BDA, BDC, DFA, BDDF, EBC, EBCA, ECA, FEB, GBBDA, GBLB, JEA, IL, JEC, JECA, JGF, and JHCD.

· Approved rescinding board policy JECB.

· Approved the resignation of Shannon Garner as elementary principal effective June 30, 2014.

Closed Session April 14, 2014

Approved employing Mrs. Sally Jones as teacher on a .50 F.T.E. contract for the 2014-2015 school year.

Closed Session April 19, 2014

Approved reassignment of Mr. James Hamlin and employing him as elementary principal for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years.
