MADELINEDEJOURNETTadvancensc@sbcglobal.net Katy Rhodes slides down an inflatable ride at the Advance Community Library's one-year anniversary celebration on June 26, 2004. The library will celebrate its 10th anniversary this Saturday, June 21 with another block party from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Saturday, June 21, 2014 will be a lively one in Advance!

June 21, 2014 will mark a red-letter day for the "Little Library That Could."

The day will be spent outdoors, with games for the kids--an inflatable obstacle course, a duck pond, and lots of other fun activities. Barbecued pork sandwiches, chips, and sodas will be on sale under the tent.

Inside the library, special guests will read stories to the children, and there will be a silent auction of items donated by local businesses. "A Taste of Advance" will feature gift certificates for two of Advance's restaurants--El Mexicano and My Daddy's Cheesecake Cafe and Bakery.

Ten years ago, on June 26, 2004, a cast of local volunteers started the library, which operates under the auspices of the City of Advance.

The opening was truly a "grass-roots" operation, with individuals from all segments of society working together to find a place for both children and adults to find books to read.

"We appreciate the community's support over these ten years we have been in operation, and we want to give back to our citizens by having a fun event for everyone!" said Library Board President Cara Mayberry.

Word is that John T. Wayne, a good friend of the library, will visit again! Wayne is in the area again for the local Crowley's Ridge Wagon Train Ride.
