VAN BUREN — A shooting at a Van Buren campground early Sunday morning left a Dexter man hospitalized in serious condition.

The shooting occurred at about 5 a.m. at the Ozark Riverfront Campground in Van Buren, said Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Kinder, Troop G’s public information office. The campground, formerly known as the Van Buren Campground, is located on Brown Road under the U.S. 60 bridge in Van Buren.

Investigators with the patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control were called in to assist the Van Buren Police Department and Carter County Sheriff’s Department with the investigation.

“Investigators determined the victim, a 31-year-old Dexter man, was shot at the campsite by a member of his own party,” Kinder said. “ … The victim is currently in a St. Louis hospital in serious condition.”

Preliminary investigation details “do not rule out an accidental shooting and no arrest has been made,” Kinder said.

Further details are not being released at this time.
