Silver and Gold
"Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold." The words filled the air as the words were sung. As one group began the lines, another waited, and then started singing as the first group got to the second phrase. A third group started when the first group began the second line. It was an easy round to sing and they loved it. The lines fit together forming a harmony that was seamless yet comfortable. Of all the songs they sang, it seemed to draw them close as a group--like a sung hug.
Over the years the simple round remained a favorite of the group. Even when they might disagree on other things, the simple round drew them back to a solid core of friendship and sisterhood that bound them together.
Years--actually decades had passed since they had been together as a group, yet somehow the simple words and melody always brought back the memories and emotions of being a part of that group; growing up together; exploring life together; and discovering who they could become. It was a warm fuzzy in song.
She was in a different setting today. Friends who had come into her life over the previous ten or so years were there as well as new people. She always looked forward to this annual gathering. It was a time to reconnect; to sound out the joys, sorrows, frustrations, and victories of others' lives; a time to sing and rejoice; a time to discover the new, say goodbye to the old, dream of what could be. This was a time to be the body of Christ together--in this setting--for this time; a reminder of the age old mystery of belonging.
As people passed through her area there were moments of hugs, greetings, conversations or simple acknowledgements and introductions. Not everyone were close friends, but they all held a common bond. Conversations flowed around her, like streams merging, flowing, parting, yet all moving for a common good.
In the back of her mind, she could hear the melody of "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold." A new friend was found. Although they had only met, it felt as if they had known each other forever. The recognition of old souls in new forms came to them--and they knew a new relationship was forged; one that was now unrefined, but sparkled with the potential of great strength and value.
As the gathering ended, she reflected upon those relationships. Some were proved over the test of time; others were just beginning to be discovered. All were valued. "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold."
Holy One, we thank you for relationships. Just as you said "It's not good that the human is alone" we recognize that we need one another. Help us to cherish one another; to treat one another with kindness and humility; and to find the incredible value of each life for there is our silver and gold. So be it. Amen.
