Hard times ahead for education, if HB 253 passes!
Open Letter from School administrator
I have received a press release from Superintendent Stan Seiler of the Advance RIV School district. We will run this letter in next week's issue of the North Stoddard Countian, but I feel that this issue will be crucial to all districts in the state.
The release reads as follows:
In September, the Missouri legislature may consider a plan that would be harmful to K-12 education and other services statewide, all in the name of ineffective tax cuts that will actually weaken our economy in the long-run. Governor Nixon vetoed the tax bill, HB 253, and legislators should oppose any attempt to override that veto.
If legislators override the Governor's veto, the impact on the students of Advance will be significant. As a rural district with one of the lowest per pupil expenditures in the region, a $230,000 reduction in our budget would be devastating. That is equivalent to more than 6 teachers; more than all of our transportation costs for getting students to and from school each day; and much more than the cost of all athletic and activity programs combined. The thought of the cuts required to make up for this shortfall, and their harmful effects on our students, is frightening to me.
One of our community's best tools for economic growth is a public school that produces educated graduates for our workforce and community. Missouri is already one of the lowest tax states in the nation. Without an educated and skilled workforce, businesses will look elsewhere. So will our young families. And our economy will suffer.
We appreciate Representative Dennis Fowler's opposition to these devastating cuts. I urge him and other legislators to continue standing up for our rural communities and schools by opposing this risky plan that would undercut our children's education, and our future.
What are they thinking???
Here we go again, with another cockamamie idea from our "trusted" politicians!
Watch for news releases from the other Missouri school districts that will find themselves hit with these draconian measures to "reduce taxes"!
