Authorities continue to search for a man who fled from authorities during a traffic stop on Saturday.

The Dexter Police said via social media on Saturday they were looking for Chris Smith.

Dexter Police Chief Hank Trout said Smith was a passenger in a vehicle. Smith then fled on foot when a traffic stop was conducted.

Smith was described as an African American male, 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. The Dexter Police said he was last seen in the area of Houston and Whitman Street. Authorities determined Smith has active warrants and should be considered dangerous.

Stoddard County Chief Deputy Andy Holden said the Sheriff’s Department has received calls of buildings and homes being tampered with out in the county. Additionally calls of little things being stolen were also received. Holden said it's not known for certain if Smith it is connected to these incidents.

On Sunday afternoon Dexter Police released footage from a residential security camera (the video can be viewed on the Dexter Police Facebook page) that appeared to show an African American male taking pillows out of a chair at the residence. Authorities said they reviewed the tape and believe this was not Smith. Trout said authorities are unsure if Smith is still in the area.

Holden advised area residents to keep the doors of their homes and cars locked when not at home. He also said not to keep keys in your vehicle and keep sheds locked.

If anyone has any information on Smith or the man in the security video call the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department at 573-568-4654 or the Dexter Police Department at 573-624-5512.
