Public warned: Scammer pretends to be Dexter Police Department

Sunday, May 5, 2024

The Dexter Police Department has received information that scammers are calling posing as a member of the police department.

“The suspect(s) in these types of cases are sophisticated and your caller ID will show the call as coming from the local Police Department,” according to a release from Chief Hank Trout. “The most recent report, the suspect called the victim and informed them that they had an active arrest warrant and if they did not go and purchase gift cards at a local business and send them the card and pin numbers, that officers would come to their residence and arrest them.”

The Dexter Police Department reminds everyone that the department does not call anyone to tell them they have an active arrest warrant or to make any type of payment.

“Please be mindful that any demands for payment by wire transfer, gift cards or cash apps should be treated with suspicion,” Trout said. “If you receive any of these calls, hang up immediately and call your local police department.

“We would like to ask the business community to be aware of customers sending large sums of money by wire transfer, cash or gift cards in single transactions or multiple smaller transactions, to warn them about possible scams. If a customer reports to have been threatened by anyone claiming to represent a local, state or federal agency, please call your local law enforcement agency.”
