From the mouths of babes
Recently, as I was out on one of my 'driving around town' excursions, I read the following words on one of our local church's marquee: "Words of Jesus in red." Those words brought to me a memory of a story Mom tells about me of something I said when just a small child.
In thinking about that, my memory started roaming down memory lane and remembering the words of some of the other children in my life.
When my oldest daughter, Gina, was just a tyke, we had gone fishing. I can't remember where we were, but her father kept casting over and over. Each time as he reeled the line in, there was nothing on it except the worm he was using as bait. Gina was doing her own thing and not paying attention. All at once she stopped what she was doing, and as her dad reeled the line in, once again with nothing but the worm, she yelled to me, "Momma, Momma, Daddy caught a worm."
On another occasion I had baked home made biscuits. My youngest daughter, Shelly, was barely talking at the time. I had not yet put the remaining biscuits away when I looked up and saw her with an arm load of biscuits. I grabbed the camera as she was saying, "Mama, shave (save) dees beescuits for me."
One evening a thunder and lightening storm came up. As usual, I had a yard full of kids. I have shared with you in the past about how my sister, Linda, couldn't say sister and for whatever reason, it came out as Dida. As a result I am known to all my neices and nephews as Aunt Dida. My neice, Sondra, was one of the kids in the yard that day. As the thundering increased, she came running to me screaming, "Aunt Dida, it's a hundering (thundering), it's a hundering. A bamada (tornado)s coming."
Our granddaughter, Kaci, tops them all. From the time that child started talking, until today at age 25, you never know what is going to come out of her mouth. There is no way I can put in public print some of the funniest things she has said through the years. Sure wish I could. When she was small and her nose would stop up, she would call her mother and say, "I can't sleep". Toni, her mom, would ask why and she would say, "My nose is too nervous".
If we would have kept all her sayings in writing down through the years, I could have written a book and made a fortune for all of us. I would love to tell the story as to why we called her Virgina for a while, but I can't. That was the most hillarious of all. Kaci, you might want to visit Mema a little more since I know so much.
Getting back to the beginning and the words out of my mouth when just a babe. Mom was reading the Bible and sharing it with me. She explained to me that the words printed red were the words Jesus spoke. I then asked her, "Mom, are the black words the devil's?" Well, wouldn't that make sense to a small child?
There are so many more I could share, but space won't allow all those words "out of the mouths of babes".
I'm sure this will start your thoughts going back and you will be remembering the words of the children in your life, whomever they may be. I know many of you will be sharing them with me via e-mail, texting, phone calls and when we see each other. I am already anxiously waiting to hear all your stories.
See ya next time somewhere in a "korner".
