***FREE ACCESS - Authorities investigating shooting in Dexter
A Dexter man is in a Memphis hospital and a suspect is in custody following a Tuesday morning shooting in Dexter.
According to a news release from Dexter Police Chief Hank Trout the Dexter Police were contacted by a deputy with the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department at 12:15 p.m. The deputy contacted the Dexter Police about a shooting investigation being conducted by the Sheriff's Office.
Trout said at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, Erik Schmidt, 33 of Dexter, arrived at the emergency room at SoutheastHEALTH in Dexter with gunshot wounds. Trout said Schmidt was in stable condition and was transferred to a hospital in Memphis for treatment.
Trout said information obtained by the Sheriff's Department during the investigation led them to believe the shooting occurred at a residence on N. First Street in Dexter. According to the news release the Stoddard County Major Case Squad was activated and an active investigation is underway.
Trout said a suspect was taken into custody. The name of the suspect will not be released until formal charges have been filed.
